Mono Mondays: Amphiptere
Share
On Mondays, we like to support our resident artist, Mono! They're an up-and-coming scribbler of things dark and weird, and we consider ourselves lucky to have leeched onto— er, formed a mutually beneficial relationship with them. You can watch Mono hard at work creating various pieces on their YouTube channel. For those who don't feel like watching digital paint getting splashed around, we'll be showcasing a different piece of theirs right here every Monday.
This week, we're showcasing Mono's mild obsession with dragons.

Dragons come in a wide variety, but those specimens found in European mythology tend to fall into four categories: the conventional dragon, which has four legs and a pair of wings; the wyvern, which has two legs and a pair of wings; the amphiptere, which has no legs and a pair of wings; the drake, which has legs but no wings, and the wyrm, which has no limbs whatsoever. There are some arguments about the nomenclature, so don't be surprised if someone else splits them up differently, but the important thing here is that Mono subscribes to this particular split.
As you can see from the wings and lack of legs, this particular specimen is an amphiptere. Mono drew this as practice with different kinds of scales. We had a bit of a time getting them to post this one. The moment Mono looked at the piece, they started talking about things they should fix. In fact, there's a nonzero chance that you'll see an updated version of this fella next week.
To each their own, we say. After all, we aren't artists. We just run a website where you can buy funny shirts and read about predatory flying squirrels.
