Mono Mondays: Mimicry Contest

On Mondays, we like to support our resident artist, Mono!  They're an up-and-coming scribbler of things dark and weird, and we consider ourselves lucky to have leeched onto— er, formed a mutually beneficial relationship with them.  You can watch Mono hard at work creating various pieces on their YouTube channel.  For those who don't feel like watching digital paint getting splashed around, we'll be showcasing a different piece of theirs right here every Monday.

This week, we have a contest of sorts going on.

Mono explained that the inspiration for this piece was the idea that slimes could mimic objects, similarly to mimics.  At that point, they paused and thought to themselves, "How similarly?"  This is the result.

To be clear, each of our camouflaged shapeshifters has strengths and weaknesses when it comes to their mimicry.  For example, a mimic's reproduction tends to have a few visual issues, while a slime can get the look right but can't alter its blobby texture.  "Both have a very obvious tell as well, although the more experienced ones can hide it. A mimic will always have a mouth with deep red gums (this is why they like to mimic chests so much, the gums look like velvet holding the gold).  A slime is always a little translucent, so you can see its core.  Common slimes tend to be the best at shapeshifting because they don't have any patterns to hide; as long as they can make their core look like something else, they can easily pass."

So, which of these two is better at mimicry?  Overall, it tends to be the creature that plays to its strengths better.
