Mono Mondays: Northern Exposure

On Mondays, we like to support our resident artist, Mono!  They're an up-and-coming scribbler of things dark and weird, and we consider ourselves lucky to have leeched onto— er, formed a mutually beneficial relationship with them.  You can watch Mono hard at work creating various pieces on their YouTube channel.  For those who don't feel like watching digital paint getting splashed around, we'll be showcasing a different piece of theirs right here every Monday.

This week, Mono would like everyone to know that the latest Resident Evil movie was pretty good.

It was so good, in fact, that Mono was inspired to do some undead-themed artwork.  This fellow can be found in the far northern reaches of Mono's setting.  When the air is cold enough for blood to crystallize and the local mana is dense enough to move a body even without the presence of life, you wind up with what may as well be a zombie.  The "frozen body parts" aspect of these undead keeps them shuffling in the classic zombie fashion, but they don't hunger for brains or even the living.  Instead, they're desperately drawn to other mana sources, trying to keep themselves moving by absorbing mana whenever they can.

As it happens, outside of those naturally dense pockets of mana, the largest localized mana sources tend to be living creatures.  The end result is much the same: if you see someone like this approaching, they aren't getting closer to say "Hi."
